Sydney Doctor Home

Sydney is Australia’s largest city and continually growing. There is always a growing demand for doctors both GPs and specialists in a city of millions of people in which the aged population is living longer. The baby boomers are now hitting retirement and they alone offer a real challenge to the doctors of Sydney. But finding a doctor in Sydney today is made easier by use of phone directories and more particularly the online search engines. You can even pinpoint an area with a postcode to better find a Sydney doctor.

GPs are the main doctors in Sydney and they can be found in a private practice, in public hospitals and clinics in the CBD and spread throughout the suburbs.

Specialists and other types of doctors

If you need a specialist then your GP is probably your best starting point. Your GP will know the appropriate and often the best specialists in the area of your need. Perhaps you require a Sydney GP but have a particular request. You may wish to deal only with a female doctor or one who has experience in fertility or IVF matters. Again it can be easy to locate such a doctor with little effort on your behalf.

If you wish to or have to pay using the bulk billing system, then it may not be possible for you to always see the same doctor. In a bulk billing clinic you may have to see whichever doctor is available at the time.

But a regular visit to your Sydney GP is sound advice. Regular check-ups, particularly as you age, can be a godsend enabling you to overcome any health problem before it becomes difficult to manage.

Public hospitals are available

Attending your local GP is sometimes not an option. If you have an emergency or if your medical issue is an out of hours situation, then the emergency department of a public hospital is a definite option. The emergency department of a private hospital is also a 24/7 operation but you will need to pay for service in these hospitals.

Your GP will most likely have a locum service which means when you ring your GP after hours, the locum service will answer and you can arrange for a doctor to come to you. Again this will probably require a payment but the service is available regardless of the time.

Newcomers to Sydney

One of the first things you should do upon moving to Sydney is to locate a GP. The telephone directories and online search engines will help but sometimes word of mouth is helpful. You could ask neighbours or work colleagues for a recommendation. And the local government offices will have a health centre and they too can be of assistance.

There are many Sydney doctors and it is wise that you choose a doctor in whom you have confidence.  A good relationship between doctor and patient is good for all concerned and particularly for you the patient. There is nothing more important than your good health.
